These winches use a conventional friction brake in the drum. This brake drags the inside of the drum during winching and then uses a cam locking device to lock the drum when you stop winching. 2 benefits that this type of brake offers is that it is very compact and does not require air. These winches will have run on after releasing the power in or power out switches. It is also not suggested to use it for holding load. This type of brake will create some heat in the drum, so allowing longer duty cycle times will prevent rope damage.
